François Uzan – Between Two Worlds
As part of the “New Caledonia New Zealand Season 2007” and the Christchurch Arts Festival, leading New Caledonian sculptor, François Uzan, presents an exhibition at CoCA Gallery in Christchurch.
François Uzan constructs his delicate sculptures from cast bronze and a rich palette of natural and found materials including coral, feathers, coconut fibre, and mother-of-pearl. Reflecting on the body and mind’s sense of time, movement and memory in relation to the environment of his tropical island home, with gentle humour he explores the interplay between Western art and that of native New Caledonian Kanak.
Born in France, and living and working in Nouméa since 1990, Uzan draws on his training as an engineer to make his unique sculptures. His work speaks of his exploration of evolving human identity in a way that is as much physical as metaphysical.
