This year, the annual Marlborough Grape Ride has the infusion of Gallic flavour – an international team is competing, from New Zealand’s closest neighbour, New Caledonia.
New Caledonian cyclists Chris Jenner, Florian Bonnerot, Gregory Lemaiter, Guillaume Geiller, Mike Villaz and Aude Salmon are being joined by New Zealander Greg Scott for the TNL/Peak Fuel Speed Bunnies section of the 2007 Grape Ride.
The TNL/Peak Fuel "Speed Bunnies"
This section is for pro/elite racers. Riders must be nationally registered and show this documentation at registration. The women will ride in their own group for '07 and complete the standard 101km course. The men will start their event at Picton at 7am at what is recognised as the first transition area for the relay riders. They will then ride through to Havelock on the Queen Charlotte Drive and head east to Renwick where they will pass the Forrest Estate stone wall and then complete a full 101km circuit back to Forrest Estate where they will finish. Total ride distance will be 160km. There is a $12,000 cash prize pool thanks to TNL Freighting Ltd for the "Speed Bunny" section and finishers down to 10th placing will be recognised. Peak Fuel will again be putting up the King and Queen of the mountain trophies along with Peak Fuel products.
The New Caledonian Cycle Team appears as part of the "New Caledonia New Zealand Season 2007", an initiative of and proudly supported by the Government and Provinces of New Caledonia.
