Season of New Caledonia

Schedule

Where

As part of the “New Caledonia New Zealand Season 2007” and WOMAD, traditional Kanak dancers WETR perform and present a workshop at WOMAD New Zealand 2007.

Adorned in red, white and black body paint, bush material dress and accessories, the 15 male and female dancers comprising WETR are accompanied by leaf drums, whirling seed pods, stamping bamboo poles – mixed with whispers, grunts, bird cries and harmonious choral singing.

WETR (Lifou Islands)

Lifou Islands group WETR use traditional Kanak dance to link the past with the present, bringing a living expression of the culture of their roots, and melding the visible and hidden worlds.

Since the group's creation in 1992, WETR have studied traditional dances and little by little the elders of each tribe from the Wetr district have revived the legends and dances from the past. These dances tell ancient stories and myths as well as celebrating everyday life.

WETR dances are much more than a picture sequence and incorporate all elements of choreography - light show, costumes and direction. New steps and ancient gestures are performed together.

The magical movement and sound of the Lifou men and women has been applauded by audiences throughout the South Pacific, Europe, Singapore and the United States.
